How to reconnect?

I have a WRT54G connected to my cable modem and a laptop with a WUSB54G adapter (WAP enabled, No DHCP, MAC address filter)
Normally I am able to connect the internet without problems.

Sometimes the connection is lost for no apparent reason. It does not happen very often. My wireless phone or microwave are not interfering as I have tested it several times.
Now, I'm happy to assume that it is because of some neighbourgh's microwave. No problem here.

The real question is, WHY when the connection is lost, do I have to reset both the router and the laptop to reconnect? Trying any other thing just leaves the laptop forever trying to repair the connection (sometimes it does not get an IP address- altough it's fixed, other times it's a DNS problem....). Desabling and reanabling the Wireless network does not help either...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
