Hi, I'm new. rhythmchyc's the name. I'm really stressed right now about this so pardon me for what's written below. I'm usually quite nice in person.

I have a brand new HP Pavillion Windows Vista laptop 32 bit.

I bought the aforementioned WUSB54GSC a month ago trying to access the network my brother has next door to me. He said I don't have to put up any security settings because he left it unsecure. It didn't work.

I bought a Wireless N, supposedly the more updated one, that didn't work.

I bought a USB extension cord and repurchased the WUSB54GSC and taped it up to the wall in my hallway to where there's absolutely great reception in my apartment.

I installed it the old fashioned way and, to my surprised, it worked. For like 3 days. There used to be 4, sometimes 5 bars. Strange thing is that the Linksys program never showed up. It's as if the Windows Configuration thing beat it down even before it could settle in. I didn't think this was a problem until a couple of days ago when the signal isn't only weak, it drops every minute or so. There're 2, barely 3, and it keeps dropping service after a minute!!!

My laptop's WIFI is still on along with this one and for some reason, it locates more networks than the adapter does. The signal is weaker but the range is greater.

I updated the drivers by going to Device Manager and updating. I got the 3.0 version. That didn't work. I turned my firewall off. All of my antivirus is disabled. I don't have an SSID or WEP or any of those things on.

I don't know what firmware is or if they're only for routers and do I have to get one.

All I know is I want to have internet access and I can't. Someone please help me. I'm seriously stressed. I checked the threads but I haven't found a problem similar to mine.

Sorry so this was so long

Why are you using a USB adapter when you laptop has built in wifi?

The laptop's antennas are located in the display frame.... whereas the USB adapter's antenna is all enclosed in the little USB key....

If you can, I would use the built in Wifi that the laptop has...... It should work with any Wireless B or G access point, and N access points as well, but will be limited to G speeds.

You will probably need to UNINSTALL the Linksys software. The linksys software will overtake the Windows Wirelesss Zero-Config software, causing problems.....

Read your laptop's owners manual to see how to turn on the built in wifi if you don't know how.

sounds like the problem is association with the wirless network. if you can download netstumbler (www.netstumbler.org) and run the program. it should give you a diagnosis of the wifi signal coming from your brothers house. you should be able to find where in your house is the best reception. are there any other wireless cells running in your local area? cordless phones or other devices that are interfering with the signal.#

btw when wireless device does your brother have? if he can lower the beacon interval does this help?
