Ok bear with me while I try to explain this.

I just moved into a new house, and in my old house I had a WRT54G that I had a hard wire running to my computer that was in my room in the upstairs of the house.

In my new house i have the WRT54G downstairs as in the old house however in the new house I can't run a hardwire to the computer upstairs, due to certain circumstances. Therefore I purchased a wireless card for my PC. However, my connection is low and very slow. Now I am trying to come up with different ways to get a better connection.

Here's my current setup. In downstairs office I have a Cable modem, a PC, and the WRT54G. Also in the office from the previous owner is a wall jack with 4 cat5 jacks, that all run to a central point in my basement. Also one of the cat5 wire runs upstairs into the bedroom across the hall from mine. Like I said running a wire to my room is out of the question.

What I was considering doing was taking a BEFSR41 and putting in the basement where all the cat5 cables, leaving the cable modem in the office and hooking it up to the wall jack that will run to the BEFSR41. Then putting the WRT54G upstairs in the room with the jack to use it as a wirelss AP for the PC that is in my room and hoping the signal improves.

I am trying to do this without spending anymore money, but i'm not sure that i will be able to use the BEFSR41 and the WRT54G together, which is why I came here. I am also open to any better solutions.

You could always try to boost the signal on the WRT54G with third party firmware...

and yes this site as all the thirdparty firmwares in their download section. If you try this just remember to do a hard reset after you upgrade the firmware. (Hold the reset button in for 30 seconds that is on the back of the router.)

Towards your question about connecting the BEFSR41 to the WRT54G I am not definitly sure but I will look into it for you. Till them i'm sure somebody else here has the answer to that.

Will the firmware really boost my signal? Right now my WRT54G has version v3.03.6 linksys firmware

Yes... That orginially was one of the biggest features of third party firmware, it has grown into a lot more features now. I would give HyperWRT or Sveasoft.

your solution sounds like it will work and having the ap upstairs is better anyway use the wired router in the basement and turn the wireless into just an ap it will work im for sure.
if that dont work dont you have a spare 5 port hub just layin around?
    doesnt everyone?
hook that into the basement and then the ap into your hub. along with the cable modem
    i think that might work.
