I need to exchange my WRT54G

So I bought a WRT54G from Circuit City on Black Friday (Late November) and went home to figure out it was a v5 and what that meant. I suffered for a while with lower speeds until I found a beta firmware 1.00.3 which helped a lot, so I didn't return it. Now I found out that firmware from Linksys keeps track of old connections for 5 days and the only way to fix it is with 3rd party firmware.

So, will I still be able to return it over a month later to Circuit City or Linksys and get a v4 or WRT54GL or am I SOL?

Call Linksys first. They may very well exchange it for you. I don't know what Circuit City's return policy is, but it's usually at least a month for most stuff if I recall. If you're beyond the date, then just be really polite to the returns rep, and I'm sure he'll work something out for you, ESPECIALLY if you are willing to pay the upgrade amount to a GS or GL and make it an exchange rather than a return.

If you still have the box with the UPC attached to it and sealed in the plastic wrap, you can take this to your local BestBuy (BB)/CircuitCity (CC) to exchange with other products. Tell them that you got this as a X'mas gift.

I recently did an even exchange of two telezappers with a WRT54G v5 @RadioShack (RS). Then, I took this WRT54G v5 to a nearby BB and added $20+6%tax to exchange with a WRT54GS v3. This exchange @BB comes with two $15 rebates (a total of $30) whereas my telezappers only costed me about $2. So, I got this WRT54GS v3 not only for free, but also made some $$ to cover the gas visiting RS and BB. Right now, I am using this WRT54GS v3 with DD-WRT v2.3 + VoIP.

Good luck with your exchange and be sure to factory reset your router before you put it back to the box. BTW, I don't know if BB/CC/RS will let you do an exchange if the box is not sealed in a plastic wrap. So, you may have to find someone to plastic wrap the box for you. Besides that, I believe the exchange will end by this Sunday (1/1/2006). So, hurry up.
