Is there any negative effect of changing the channel?

    I'm using a WRT54GL router.
I see there are 11 channels and the default is #6. Is there a specific use for each of them? I read somewhere that I should change the channel since the default is 6, if I do change it would there be a negative effect in its performance?

No, you need to change if other near you use channel 6 too to avoid interference. If you're the only one using it it's pretty much ok. In my range there are 4 "hotspots", mine at 6, two at 3 and one at 11. So I'm sitting pretty nicely in the middle alone. Changeing to a lower or higher one would only cause me interference with the other channels. But if there are more than one 6er around you, you may wanna change.
