    I have a Linksys WRT54G version 4 router. The firmware says v.4.20)
I have tried to flash it with some firmware from linksys info (sveasoft) and it will not flash. I also flashed my version 2 routher with the new firmware from the linksys site it appears that if you have the linksys firmware of version 4.20 or later you are unable to use the third party firmware. Is this the case please let me know. I really could use someone's expertise. Please tell me what am I doing wrong? If possible please tell me of another brand and model of router that I can use third party (linux based) firmware on.

dd-wrt version 23 "generic" will work on that v4 router. It has every feature under the sun. By the way, that v4 router is capable of speedbooster/afterburner because it is actually a GS. After flashing with dd-wrt, you may then flash with Thibor's HyperWRT for the GS (version 4 "G" and "GS")

I would recommend that you stick with either DD-WRT or HyperWRT. DD-WRT provides every feature. HyperWRT is much easier to use and is the fastest firmware to date.

If you "play" with it too much, then it will refuse to accept afterburner/speedbooster firmwares. You can then treat it like a "bricked" router to restore this functionality or just use dd-wrt v23 basic generic firmware OR Tofu's HyperWRT for the "G" model.

The v4 routers are very onery about accepting firmwares and are often quite the problem to get one loaded. Once you have a firmware that you really like, and you're really very sure of this, perform a hardware reset to "lock" it in. This will make it run better but it will now accept only firmwares in the same "family". If you convince it to run Thibor's GS firmware, then it will run versions of HyperWRT from now on. Should you hardware reset it while running DD-WRT, then it will run that or Tofu's HyperWRT. I'd recommend Thibor's because that firmware has speedbooster, increased range, fantastic speeds, and point-n-click WDS.

So, don't perform a hardware reset on a v4 router until you're very certain you like the firmware it is running. ;)

Can you elaborate a little more on the locking process and the hardware reset? Are you saying that once you install Thibor's HyperWRT you cannot go back to say the stock linksys or DD-WRT?

I bricked the version 4 I just purchased so I took it back to the store for a repalcement. I checked 6 stores and they only have the version 5. Looks like my dreams of customizing my home wi-fe network are over. I purchased the version 5 because I can't find another version 4 or 3 or 2. They only have version 5. Is there a way to order one and ensure that its a version before version 5. I have an old verson 2 that is bricked (green light flashing) I think I can get the RMA from linsys and send it back but I fear that I will get a version 5 as the replacement from linksys. Is there a way to safely unbrick the version 2. I tired everything and i can't ping it says destination unreachable.. I read that crossover cable will make it work is this true. Or shoudl I break the seal, open it up and try to unbrick via the linksys info page that shows how to open it up and do it. Please reply soon.

    Did not work

Went out and got a new version 4 wrt54g and your insturctions above did not work. It actually bricked the router. No matter I will return it to the store once more as defective. This time I will get a new version 4 again and a version 5. but after this I am done with Linksys. If you have any suggestions on how I can get this darn version 4 to load and advanced firmware. I will gladly appreciate it. Can you give step by step instaruction along with downlaod links.
