    Hey all,
I am in charge of the network for a house of about 25 people. There are about 30 computers on the network, and wireless access provided by a number of wireless routers (WRT54g). The network is set up as follows:

         | | | |
    Clients Hub WRT54g WRT54g
                       | | |
                   Clients Clients Clients
The modem is a business class DSL connection, providing 8MB downstream / 1MB upstream, however, residents have been complaining of intermittently slow internet access and lost connections (ie to AIM / online video games). I do know that a few people on the network use Bittorrent and DC++ quite regularly.

Is it possible that 30 people, a few of which file share regularly, are overwhelming the main WRT54g connected to the modem? Should we look into getting a more powerful router? Does anyone have experience using the WRT54g with 30+ network clients?

A couple of heavy uploaders are enough to overwhelm your network (your Internet link actually).

In that kind of environment QoS (or other traffic shaper) is a must.

Also think on incresing the number of connections (ports) for the WRT54G (default is 512 I think). Emule/BitTorrent/KaD do use LOTS os connections.
