May be the classic problem.

I just bought a standard WRT54G Linksys 802.11g router. I had already been through a couple other routers, but I wanted a Linksys because at my friends' houses, they all had Linksys WRT54G routers and I was downloading files at over 200 kbps! So I bought one and when I set it up, I was getting the same download speeds as my other routers; 20-30 kbps. Am I doing anything wrong? Or am I just paranoid?

P.S. Okay, this is what REALLY vexes me. My neighbor has the exact same model router (I checked) as I do. When I connect to his router FROM MY HOUSE, I can download at great speeds (170-200 kbps).

Everything you've said suggests the problem is not your router. Check with your ISP and find out what speeds you should be getting then compare your actual download speeds to that. You undoubtedly simply have a slower internet connection than your neighbor & your friend.

Check with ISP and then try changing channels

The problem sounds like your isp, but it could be interference from the surrounding WIFI's in your neighborhood. Try using channel 10. It made a big difference in my neighborhood.

If it turns out to be your neighbors AP interferring then consider returning your stuff to the store and just using the neighbor's WLAN and ISP. :D
