I was just doing some studying for CCNP (BCMSN) when the video-instructor mentioned something that was of interest; some people make the mistake of trying to run VOIP (or any other application) "inside of the same VLAN." If some businesses make the mistake of putting their ip phones in the same vlan with their daily LAN traffic, downloads or voice traffic will become a hindrance.

By setting up vlans and placing the application in a specific one, problem is either solved or minimized.

Is anyone running separate vlans on their WRV200/WRVS4400N/RVS4000/RV0XX to use VOIP/FTP or is everything running in the same VLAN?

Thats why, if you are installing a voip network, you install switches that support QOS, and prioritize the voice traffic.

Splitting the traffic into vlans on the same switch doesn't do a whole lot, it's still not prioritized.
