Hello, all. Thanks in advance for any help. Newbie alert...

I put the latest version of Tomato on my Buffalo WBR2-G54 a few days ago. The installation went without a hitch. Now, what I want to do is use it to just hop on any network it can find, and then distribute that internet connection to the two machines in my apartment. I'm willing to deal with distributing the internet access via wires, as opposed via wireless, if necessary. So, as a result, again if my understanding is correct, that means that I need to set up my router in "wireless client" mode. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) However, what I don't understand is how I get the router to hop on a neighbor's network. I guess I don't really care which network it connects to, obviously as long as that wireless connection provides access to the internet. I've increased the router's transmit power in the Tomato configuration from 22 to 60 (I want to steer clear of the 70 that people say may damage the router), and I've tried choosing a couple of different channels, each of which had half a dozen or so access points, but the router never seemed to acquire an IP address. What am I doing wrong? Can someone point me in the right direction? Sorry for the n00b question...
