Guys, I'm very new to this network thing and would love a little help if you have the answers.

I purchased a WTR54G V7 (and then discovered via this forum the downfalls of V7, not to worry) with the intention of hooking up four PC's and eventually getting broadband. I currently have Dialup.

    My Question:

Would I hook up the PC with Dialup into the Internet Port and then all the rest into the other ports? (And then when I finally get Broadband, set it up the way it should be).

If this be the case, then would I use the IP address etc from the Dialup PC to set up the router?

Sorry if my questions are a bit on the dumb side but as I said, I'm new to this kind of thing but am very willing to learn, just call me Grasshopper

    Cheers, John

I haven't heard of anyone doing this with a dialup connection. If you wan't to do this it might be possible assuming you were to use Windows internet connection sharing. But that would most likely require you to manually dialup when ever you wanted to use the Internet from another computer.

Yeah im not sure i would try to use more then one machine on dialup but you could do i many ways including and as stated you would have to use internet connection sharing on the main pc in order to do that. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

I don't believe setting up the ICS Server on the WAN port will work, but it may if you disable PPP login (I don't have a WRT54G, so I'm not sure what all you would need to disable).

IMHO, the best way to do this is to just connect all PCs up to the switch ports on the WRT54G, change the IP address of the router to fit your needs (it doesn't need to be since that's what ICS uses) and then disable DHCP on the router. That's all you'll need to do. Since ICS has a built-in DHCP server, the PCs on the LAN will retrieve their IP information from the ICS server (as long as the ICS server is on) and they will have access to the ICS dial-up connection.

I've used that configuration for the past 4 years without problem... I even have my XBox360 connected through ICS (Heavy Weapon is playable over Live on 28.8 dial-up!!!)

Thanks for the tip LordFlux... recently picked up a WRT54GL so I could share some wireless devices on my crappy dialup connection thru a PC with dialup and winroute firewall. Key to getting it working was to turn off the hw router's dhcp and turning on winroute's.
