    I'm considering buying either a Linksys WAP54GX or a WRT54GX.

My question is whether there are any advantages to using the WAP54GX over the WRT54GX? The WRT54GX costs about $20 less and of course it has a built-in router which I can utilize later if I choose. For right now I have a separate router I am using so if I decide to purchase the WRT54GX, I'll be using it as a WAP only.

Presently there are no advantages of purchasing the WAP54GX over the WRT54GX. The original WAP54G gave you Access Point Client, Repeater and Bridge Mode, but these modes are not available on the WAP54GX. It is unknown, if Linksys will enhance the WAP54GX to give it any additional modes of operation. The WRT54GX has a DHCP server in addition to the router features. The WRT54GX cannot be bridged at this time with present firmware. There are two versions of the WRT54GX version 1.0 did not have three removable antennas and version 2.0 did. The WRT54GX2 has two non-removable antennas and uses SRX200 instead of SRX, which is supposed to give a little less range and speed then SRX. There have not been any comparison tests between the WRT54GX and the WRT54GX2 at the present time. There is no third party firmware for the WAP54GX, WRT54GX or WRT54GX2 at the present time. You should disable the DHCP server on the WRT54GX, change its local address not to conflict with your current router, if necessary and disable the NAT under advanced routing if you want to use it as a access point only. In addition connect it to your original by one of the LAN ports and not the WAN port. If your original router has wireless capabilitied change the channel on the WRT54GX so both routers are at least five channels away from each other to prevent interference, which will degrade throughput on both units.
