Not sure this is the correct forum for this issue..

I'm setting up a RV042 at a customer site for mobile users to connect via QuickVPN to access a Terminal Server. The RV042 is in place and seems to be working fine. I'm testing the QuickVPN access from my home going through a Linksys BEFSX41 VPN router.

I can get QuickVPN to connect and can ping machines on the remote network no problem.. I can connect to a machine on the remote net through the MMC console by typing the IP Address.. I am unable to Net View \\machine name or connect to any shared resource via netbios names.. In fact I can not connect to anything using NetBios names...

I'm aware of the Netbios setting in the advanced section for Site-to-Site VPN tunnels but see no equivalent setting for QuickVPN users..

    Am I missing something?

nope i dont think you are missing anything. it is not a feature of QuickVPN to use NetBios broadcasts across it. NetBios Broadcasts take up bandwidth. you could possibly use DNS, WINS or the LMHOST file to fix this.

    Thanks Simon,

I had wondered about that ... then again.. :

    a) I tested this yesterday by setting up the RV042 at my home and got on my neighbor's unsecured wireless network and connected and was able to use Remote Desktop to remote one of my computers.... using a netbios name.. no problem...

... so I'm wondering how this worked...????

    b) Apparently there's an issue with the RV042 when using NETBIOS over VPN and going through a BEFVP41 and IPSEC... Firmware 1.3.74 for the RV042 fixes this.. so I'm wondering if this has any effect..

ie.. "8. Fix the issue that NETBIOS traffic cannot pass through when RV042 is connected with BEFVP41 via IPSec."

    Lastly... Using LMHosts worked...

I had hoped QuickVPN would make VPN easy for users but apparently not if I'm going to have to instruct them to use IP addresses... and if users want to remote control their own desktop computers from offsite via QuickVPN then I'll have to set up the whole network with static IP's... not something I really wanted to do...

So much for QuickVPN... eh ?

gateway to gateway mode has a netbios setting in the advanced setting of the VPN tunnel setup.

Client to Gateway also has settings for this.

A tunnel created between the VPN Router and the Client user which using VPN client software that supports IPSec. When click "Add Now", it will show Add New Client to Gateway Tunnel page that however is not for QuickVPN.

The VPN Client Access (for QuickVPN) in rv042 doesn't have any settings for this.

"gateway to gateway mode has a netbios setting in the advanced setting of the VPN tunnel setup."

Yes, I'm aware of that setting. I mentioned it in my initial post..

Just wondering why I was able to remote control a computer via Windows Remote Desktop on my network from my neighbor's network, using QuickVPN and specifiying the NetBios name..???

Also, wondering what's the point of QuickVPN if it won't let a user connect to a remote computer by using the netbios name..
