Unfortunately installing OpenWRT on my Netgear router trashed the board_data partition. I am sort of back up and running ... but need to re-burn that info. I can do that, using Netgear firmware, but I can't get it to install due to the messed up board data. I can install a TRX file, but ... how to extract the TRX file from the CHK file?

You might try the lede/openwrt forum, I do remember that in some cases the method is to use the dd command that information is openwrt documentations just have to look it up all it does it convert a bin image to trx for the purpose cutting off the header a bit so a person can go back to stock firmware, personally I've not done it with a Netgear model. Do some searching on their forum use the documentation.
