    WRT54g dropouts, hangs, frustration...

Tried earlier beta firmware, finally tried 4.00.7 High. No more disconnects, no more dropouts. Don't forget the reset (and the reprogramming, sigh!). My unit is a WRT54g V2.2. For those recommending moving to D-Link earlier in the forum, I originally used a DI524 which had serious problems working with secure EDI commercially (with no fixes in sight). No problems with the Linksys in that regard. Very happy! Finally!

    Hello all,

On my Linksys WRT54G (v 3.0), the "WRT54GV3.1_4.00.7_US_code.bin" sucessfully solved my issues with large files transfers between a wired and wireless computer. The only thing I have noticed is the speed is reduced, I'd say by one third or half. I am happy with the tradeoff since I'd rather have a sucessful transfer rather than a speedy one that drops the connection half way through.

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback and started the topic so that I had a reference to fix a very annoying problem ;)

    Ink Noise.

Does anybody tested this configuration already?

Solved my probs - without updating :)

After having read about the modifications to clockspeed that the beta version included, I thought I'd give it a shot with my current firmware, v3.03.6.

Thing is, I read that some people had several new problems (speeds etc) with both the betas, and I've had problems myselft with beta feature-releases before... I just didn't want to go there. The official 3.03.6 was doing its job for me, with exception for just this one "large transfers/high speeds = RESET" issue.

I used the post-3.x.x ping expolit (documented elsewhere) to get to the command line, and set the clkfreq variable. This posting hinted that the freqs used in the new betas were 240 and 216 MHz. I'm not that familiar with MIPS architecture and the cabinet where I keep my networking equipment at home is not that ventilated so, I thought I'd start with a gentle 5 MHz increase (IOW I set it to 205 MHz).

To my surprise - that tiny change did it! I've never had the router resetting itself ever since! Still runs v3.03.6.

Oh the joys of cheap hardware with Linux on it. :-D

Could you kindly post a link or info on the "ping exploit"?

    Thanks so much.

Just noticed that the Beta for the WRT54GS (v1.1) is having troubles with some clients.

All connections is using WPA-TKIP, 26 char HEX key. Mixed mode.

Zyxel B-220 can't connect to WRT when using Beta firmware.
    The B-220 connect's fine to HyperWRT 2.0

    As a side note:
Changed to the Beta because DD-WRT (pre-5) is having problems with wireless stability (Intel 2200BG) - solved by changing to Beta (and solved hangup problem & DHCP problems)
HyperWRT has hangups after heavy network trafic - but solved by the Beta.
It's not P2P - but server traffic with many in/out going connections.

solved all my problems. I'm using Alchemy-V1.0 Have transfered 10 x 4,7 GB via WDS now :) No problem

Can I add this to startup?

I have a WRT54G (v2.2), and the "WRT54GV3.1_4.00.7_US_high.code.bin" solved all issues I had (wireless disconnects, large files/high speed lan transfers).

Does anybody know when we can expect any other firmwares based on this one?

  10. trbrol

    trbrol Network Guru Member

This firmware solved the lan related problems on my WRT54G v 2.2 also ,but I still have many internet (PPPoE) disconnects. If there gonna be a fix to this problem I hope to see third-party firmwares build on this.

WRT54G v2.2 it finally does work

    hi everyone

i got a v2.2 router had latest 3.03.6 on it. was installed at a client location, but had the wiredest issues from the start about 4 weeks ago, changed settings as per linksys, upgraded drivers and software for pc wireless linksys nics, this helped a little, but only got connectivity from 24mbps-36mbps even though it was a short distance and except for when we tried running a backup from one computer to the other (about 12000 files = 700MB)
after about 2-10 minutes we had crashes, drop offs of pings, and router freeze up even for wired computers.
i never tried 3rd party firmware.

i finally gave up today and installed my own v3 router, copied the settings over and everything is just "peachy" now. great speeds. no drop offs running on 3.03.6.

so i took the damn v2.2 to my house. plugged it in and played with it. same problems at my office. so finally i stumbled upon this forum (reading up on some user reviews pointed me here). i first tried the 4.00.5 download. upgrade worked fine but still same problem within 1 minute.
then i downloaded the 4.00.7 US High download. upgrade worked fine.

AND IT FINALLY WORKS!!! i'm now copying for about 25 minutes a couple gigs of data from wired computer to wireless laptop and no drops what so ever, even the ping rate is not bad!

finally a fix for this nasty problem....

thankx for the posts with the firmware!!!

I there. I've got a WRT54GS v1.1 router. I'm from Europe so I was wondering if is there any problem flashing my router with this beta firmware since it has the US initials.

WRT54GS v1.1 working better with beta

My GS 1.1 was having the disconnect issue that so many in this forum have reported. I've got a mix of windows, mac and linux systems on my LAN, some wireless and some not. While internet access and email appeared fine, large (>100KB) file transfers would frequently fail.
So, I've flashed the beta firmware (WRT54GSV2.1_4.50.5_US_code.bin) and I'm happy to report that it appears to have solved my problem. I did the full reset after the flash BTW. Now I've transferred several 1GB files without a hitch.
One minor side effect, after the firmware update I started getting dropouts with AirTunes. Flashing the Airport Express to 6.1.1 firmware fixed that.
Thanks folks, this forum is quite helpful!

You lose a few channels only, the US firmware is more restricted - but its well worth it IMHO!
  16. n3oNx

    n3oNx Network Guru Member

I noticed that I lost channels 12 & 13 but I couldn't use them anyway because I have linux running on one of the PCs and it uses wireless and linux only have up to channel 11 :p

No more disconnects due to big files transfers. So far so good :p

You'll brick your router because our Yank firmware is made for 60HZ AC and weak-ass beer. :->

    Upload Are Failed.

    Upload Are Failed. Balls.

Wiped 2x, flashed v4.00.7 high. Flashed again for the hell of it. Reconfigured. Clients connecting OK.

Then, boom, dropped connections seemingly out of nowhere. Tried different channels, no love found.

Tried to flash Alchemy v1.0. Upload are failed within 15 seconds of starting. Didn't brick the router, thank God.

Tried to flash Sartori v4. Upload are failed, again, but no harm done.

Looks like I'm stuck on LinkSys v4.00.7 for the time being...

    Frequent disconnects - WRT54G v2.0

Hi, everyone. I'm brand new to this forum, but I sure am glad I found you! Anyway, I have a v2.0 WRT54G (per the serial number) with v3.03.6 firmware. I'm seeing frequent wireless disconnects. Obviously, this has been a problem for a while, per this thread. But I'm a little confused. Simply: what should I do? I'm seeing stuff about beta firmware but only that it works on v2.2.

Can someone shed some light on this for me, please? I run a small, 10 person office and these disconnects are a real pain.

    Thanks in advance...

I have been having random permanent disconnects between my WMP54G and my WRT54Gv3. Using the latest official Linksys Firmware these disconnects would happen every 2 days. But with the 4.00.7 high code firmware It happens twice every day. I have no idea what'll fix my problem now. :(

Is it possible to revert back to the latest official firmware?

    Tinypeap for WRT54G

    Hi Folks,

I am looking for tinypeap for my router WRT54G v2.2 (firmware v3.03.6) to use it as RADIUS server.

Could someone tell me if there is a way to do that?

at I couldn't download the file "WRT54G Beta2.13" (get the message not authorized)

Second question: What are the features of " WRT54GV3.1_4.00.7_US_high.code.bin"

    I appreciate your help

Great post. Not sure if this is clear from the previous posts, so here's a success story for the WRT54Gv2.0:

Had the frequent disconnect problem, very reproducable, could not stay connected for more than a minute. Main purpose for wireless is Xbox (using WGA54G). Just flashed with WRT54GV3.1_4.00.5_US_code. Not only is the disconnect problem gone, but speed is 1 Mbps faster. I did not even attempt WRT54GV3.1_4.00.7 or WRT54GV3.1_4.00.7_high. If you have the WRT54Gv2.0, take my advice and go straight for the WRT54GV3.1_4.00.5, and don't forget the 30 second reset.

Replaced my WRT54G v1.1 with a WRT54GS v2.1 on Thursday... Internet stuff worked Okay but no large file transfers with my IBM G41 laptop internal wireless to local machines inside my house. But, my Linksys Wireless Card in my DELL desktop seemed to xfer Okay... go figure...

Just now Flashed to WRT54GSV2.1_4.50.5_US_code.bin and large xfers are back... seems to have fixed the problem...

    Re: Frequent disconnects - WRT54G v2.0

I have good success with HyperWRT 2.0 on 2.0 version of WRT54G. Works like a clock. The only problem is that connection tops at 36Mbps for G clients but I attribute it to mixed wireless mode (I have Tivo on B wireless connection).

By the way most complaints about wireless disconnects are for WRT v.2.2 that uses a different Broadcom chip.

The WRT54GS V4.50.6 has now been released as Linksys official US software, build date and file size looks same as 4.50.5 so doubt if much change from the BETA

    yes, it is an improvement

Have the g2.0 version, was running the 3.03 fware...probs with videophone in dmz (posted in general forum). the 4.00 fixed the problem. feeling somewhat emboldened by my success, I tried the DD-WRT pre5 fware; it also worked much better than the 3.0 fware from linksys. ultimately, i've decided to keep the alchemy-based version (more tweaks), but the linksys 4 is definitely a big improvement.

I fixed my disconnect problems. It wasn't the NIC or Router at all. It was windows 2003 actually. Therefore, don't ever use windows 2003 for a wireless connection that you have to keep on 24/7. Windows XP works just fine. Stupid me :D

hi guys i got a UK version WRT54GS v1.1 , are there any beta or later firmwares than the 'Firmware Version: v3.37.2' , i was just wondering , as i can only find US firmwares ...

    Thanks for the answer
  42. mstombs

Not yet, but your router is the same as mine and I'm running the latest US firmware 4.50.6 with no problem in the UK - you just lose a few high channel nos. Looking forward to 3rd party firmwares based on this released source.

Maybe the parental control wouldn't work but who would pay to use that?
