Below is what I received from Linksys for my v5 WRT54G.
I followed exactly at it says.

What happened is that after upgrading to the latest official firmware for v5 from factory firmware that came on the router when I bought it, the setup screen was only half visible. The push/radio buttons did nothing and only the blue part of the setup was visible.

I did the below and when I to it prompted me to load firmware. It looked totally different then regular firmware update screen. I uploaded to the latest firmware and it worked perfectly.

The above may be old news to some, not sure.
However it worked for me. I would guess 3rd party may be loaded this way as well?

Disclaimer: Following any of the below procedure you do at your own risk. I do not assume any resposibility.

1] Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, after that
2] Unplug the power; keep holding down the reset button for another 30 seconds
3] Then plug back the power and keep holding down the reset button for 30 seconds, after that
    4] Release the reset button.

Linksys Live Chat support sent me same procedure to hard-reset my WRT300N v2.0.

Well, this is just a wild guess but I think you won't be able to flash 3rd party firmware with that method. What happens there is that by pressing the reset button during startup, the router enters some kind of safe-mode system on VxWorks, so I think that even if you try, it will give an error.

Also that will probably only work for VxWorks, thus only for v5.x+.

pressing longer that 10 secs on a V5 WRT54G will force it into Recovery Flash mode.
