Whats up all, first off, I was about to buy a new AP/router to compliment the Xbox 360 I just bought to ensure a decent connection is made for Xbox Live.
With some Google research, and found this great informative site, I'm gonna hold off and see what my trusty WRT54G can do for me.

First my router, it's a WRT54G v1.0 with the original firmware...have not updated since I bought it from Best Buy back in 03'. I basically used it to connect my laptop for around the house computing. Range kinda sucks but living in a small condo, it's ok. It has been reliable for me and never had a problem to date...knock on wood.

My concern is the connection speed I will have between my Xbox and my AP. I just don't want too much lag or loss of connection...not really concerned with linking Xbox and my PC (which I've read there are some issues with all router brands).
Currently, my laptop connects about 40%-60% signal strength in the area where the Xbox is currently located.

My question is, what do you all recommend in terms of firmware to improve signal quality? 3rd Party or the latest and greatest from

Couple of things to consider....I'm not a hardcore computer tweaker so I'm not really concerned with many of the features the 3rd party Firmware provides...nor would I use most of it. But if it provides improved signal and signal performance, I will use it.
I checked out and found it to be a great site, but prefer not to use one in this case.

Thanks to anyone who can help...and for the veterans on here, keep up the great work, you guys help out alot of people.

I've got an xbox, not a 360 so it's hardwired so I'm not directly answering your question but I did switch to this firmware:
    Firmware Version: v3.03.6 - HyperWRT 2.1b1
mostly for bit downloading and it's been a whole lot better than the stock Linksys of any version. With OEM firmware, if I pinged the router for 10 minutes, I'd get a really high ping like 800ms+ about once a minute, that disappeared with hyperwrt. You can find lots of posts/info about bit (or any peer-to-peer) downloading having problems with OEM linksys firmware.

I've been really happy with the hyperwrt, it has some added features that I don't really use, I was just after stability. Works a lot better for gaming too.
