PCI card vs. USB wireless adapter?

Hello, I have a wireless network at home using a WRT54G router and a laptop with a Linksys WPC54G card, all working fine. I want to add a desktop to the network and was trying to decide which wireless adapter to use. The USB is easiest to set up, but I had read that its signal might be weaker than the PCI card.

What would you recommend? TIA for your help!

USB adapter is not weaker. All things being equal, USB and PCI adapters should be near identical.

USB has the adavantage of being more flexible by simply attaching a USB extension cable to allow to be placed for better reception - some USB adapters come with one already. PCI adapters require getting the correct connector and cable (usually coaxial) to extend the reach of its antenna.

As esquire says it is simpler to install, however USB networking devices can take up more CPU time/resources. with a PCI card you have the chance to use a seperate antenna.

Thanks for the info -- it sounds like either method would work well.

Toxic, I wasn't sure what you meant by "with a PCI card you have the chance to use a seperate antenna." On the Linksys website for wireless adapters, I didn't see any PCI card adapters with an antenna that could be detached and/or extended. Would I have to attach a cable to extend the PCI card's antenna?

There are a couple of USB solutions that have longer cables so you can move the antenna around for better reception. The WUSB54G and WUSB54GP looked good to me.

Which of the Linksys PCI card adapters and USB adapters do you think works best? TIA again!

you can either add a larger antenna onto the PCI card, or add a directional antenna that has a coax lead that attaches to the pci card.
