I have been considering adding a storage device to my home network. The plan is to store itunes, photos, videos and all other extraneous files to the storage device and ultimately have access to it not only through the network when at home but to have access via internet. Such configuration would streamline my laptop and increase performance while still have ability to access all data at anytime.
I know the concept is quite basic but I want to set this up correctly and need help with selecting ideal hardware as well as how to configure my sweet DD-WRT v23std firmware. So if you have a minute and are willing to help; please read on.
First Q is what type of memory/hard drive device do I need. There are essentially two types. Type one is standard usb hard drive and type two is network ready hard drive with usb connectors and Ethernet connections. Now, if I purchased the new WRTSL54GS could I use the standard external hard drive (cheaper) and connect to router via USB port or would I still need a network type memory device? In other words, does it make sense to upgrade router or can I use the WRT54G v2 I am using now to pull this off?
Q 2) Currently running a DHCP set up. If I want to access my network via internet do I need a static IP address for this device and how do I set that up using the great DD-WRT firmware I am running?
If you have any comments or recommendations I would appreciate it. I really want to create a nice functional network and I need your help. Please advise.

Have you considered a Netgear WGT634U? I got one on EBAY last fall for $40 including shipping.
