    Hello all.

i have recently added Vonage to my house and got the Linksys WRTP54G from Vonage and wired the whole house by running a phone cord from port 1 to the nearest jack, and disconnected outside line via the box outside.

The router came with firmware 1.00.58.. is this the latest? if not, where can I find upgrades to the router?

    I've been having intermident problems.
sometime when I pick up, i hear no dial tone. nothing, and all calls forwarded to my cell phone.
i have to power cycle the WRTP54G to get connection back...

this happens at least once every 3, 4 days... very annoying and I would like to find a solution for it. Is there a newer firmware?

Do you use P2P (BitTorrent, eMule, etc) or any other application that subjects your WRTP54G to heavy loads? The WRTP54G is a "casual use" router, and isn't able to handle heavy loads, and I similar problems with my WRTP54G for MONTHS before putting a better router (WRT54GL w/Tofu) in front of it.

The router should be running 1.00.60, which Vonage should push to you automagically. If it doesn't, call Customer Service and have them push it. I don't think it will do much for the "router" side of the router, but it never hurts to be running the latest and greatest.

Here is the link to download a copy of WRTP54G firmware 1.00.60 from a Vonage HTTP server:
where $MAC is your WRTP54G MAC address.

I currently have a WCG200 with a RT31P2 connected. I am not happy with the performance of either. I was looking at getting the WRTP54G but I am a heavy data user and therefore need QOS. What would be considered a heavy use router? I have two UPNP devices, a Vonage line as well as four systems online almost non-stop (one wired, three wireless). What's my best bet?

For the same $$$ and may be less, your best choice is to get a Linksys WRT54GS v3 + a Linksys PAP2. Then, run one of open source code firmware on your WRT54GS v3 unit.

I have a WRT54G version 5 that came with firmware version 1.00.1 and I could make calls with my VoIP adapter and the soft phone on my laptop but could not receive calls as both the VoIP adapter and the soft phone would not ring.
I had opened ports, port forwarding, and even tried the DMZ option. Nothing worked.

I did some reading on Linksys's web site about firmware updates and I saw:

    Firmware 1.00.6
    - Resolves issues with WAP54G repeater mode
    - Resolves issues with certain PPPoE connection
    - Resolves issues with SES turning back on when applying settings
    - Resolves issues with WPA allowing Shared key selection
    - Resolves issues with web GUI ping function
    - Resolves issues with using MSN whiteboard
    - Resolves issues with instability when using Bittorent
    - Resolves issues with using certain ATA phone adapters
    - Resolves issues with connecting to NNTP news servers

The comments that caught my attention were:

    - Resolves issues with using certain ATA phone adapters

So I decided to try the firmware update v. 1.00.6
Now I can not make or receive calls with *BOTH* the VoIP adapter and the soft phone.

Also the router is now blocking irc chat channels.

On the Vonage Forum, I tend to recommend the WRT54GL with Thibor for Vonage users.

It works very well in front of my WRTP54G, and the WRTP54G is a kick-ass Vonage adapter now that it doesn't have to dedicate so many resources to routing and wireless and is just a Vonage adapter.

Hawking also makes a chip called the StreamEngine that they put in their "Internet Optimizer", the HBB1. Though I have no personal experience with the StreamEngine devices, many on the Vonage Forum have reported success using routers with StreamEngine (D-Link makes one).

If you need heavy duty routing capability and/or working QoS, just about anything is better than the Vonage routers.

    Hi all,

I just spend my last weekend pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with my WRTP54G that I just bought. I have 1.00.62 on the router and the VoIP and Wired Router part seems to be working ok. But I simply couldn't figure out what is wrong with the Wireless...

I've tried WEP, WPA-PSK, and open wireless security settings, and none of them seems to help.

Whenever I connect to the router on the laptop, it will work for a couple mins in the beginning, and then it simply hangs... The wireless icon will say that it has good connection, but no packets would be going. Resetting the router (or changing any wireless settings in the router) seems to make it work for a couple of mins again, then the same problem...

I know it's not my laptop since I tried to connect to my neighbor's open network, and it works fine for hours.

Do I have the latest firmware? Is there anything that I can do to fix this? Or should I just throw this router to the trash? Please help, thanks!

I called them today again and they still can't push the upgrades to me.
they said it will be done automatically... there is nothing I can do.

Hi SirJack! Are you saying that you no longer experience choppy voice connection with the WRTP54G with firmware 1.00.62?
