Purpose of the RF Cover

I would like to know what is the purpose of the RF cover, inside the router, enclosing the WiFi radio. Since I opened the router and noticed that the RF cover was jammed on and metal top and side clips dented. Would this affect the wireless performance or signal quality.

The RF cover is there to keep stray signals out and signals from inside in. To my understanding what is inside there is basically an amplifiier, and exposing it running may cause it to retransmit stray interference, or at the very elast will result in a degraded signal.

My WRT54GL has a very tiny dent on top of the lid also, and as long as the side clips are holding it in place, there should be no problem. If it works, it works, if it doesn't, it's too late to return it. ;)

    Thanks for the reply.

Probably the quality control person at the factory was asleep that day, since the metal bracket surrounding the radio was poorly soldered on the RF cover lid jammed on.
