I have two questions regarding the wrt54g. First question is how good is it as a firewall compared to some firewall appliances such as Sonicwall, GTA, etc? My friend has wrt54g and I configured it for him last weekend and he was asking about firewall - I told him that wrt54g can be used as firewall (SPI - stateful packet inspection). I'm not certain if third party firmware would make it compete with the industry certified firewall appliances. He simply wants the best.

The second question is if I were to have wrt54g as access point and using one of the third party firmware would I be able to set wireless network on a separate subnet from the protected (wired) network and establish rules as to what can go through to the wired network? I currently have netgear wireless access point and unfortunately I would need a sophsicated router if I wanted to have a separate subnet (linux box or something similar). Currently, wireless and wired are on the same subnet. I'm using WPA although I'm told VPN would add another level of security.

    Thanks for your help.
