I have a wrt54g (v6, latest firmware) router on the bottom floor and a laptop and computer (both wireless) on the top floor. The laptop works great everywhere in the house. The desktop (at the opposite end of the house) doesn't work as well. Sometimes the connection drops, but its usually at a reduced speed at "very good" quality.

I've read through the forums and did a little research and saw there are a number of options for improving the range/performance. For example:

    1) Antenna Stand (to move the antenna a few feet toward the entrance of the room)
    2) High Gain Antenna
    3) Directional Antenna
    4) Rangebooster PCI card

Based on my situation (above), what would you guys recommend I get?

In your case, the antenna position at 45° or horizontal is much better than vertical...

Try 1+2+3: a high gain directional antenna on a stand

If your desktop is located on the floor or with the antenna facing away from the router, move it to a more advantage position and see if that helps first - having the antenna at the back of the computer doesn't help with reception
