Repeater advice needed please, final attempt.

I've followed every step I can find on getting my WAP54G v2 (with hyperwap) to work as a repeater for my WRT54GL (with hyperwrt and tofu). Some say "it works for me, no problem". Others say "this is how I did it" and I've tried everything short of the elaborate telnet instructions without success. I don't know if I'm leaving out a step or what. I seemed to have gotten all the free advice I can get on the topic, now my posts are unanswered and I'm not complaining just stating facts. How about 3 yes or no questions then?

Is it easier to take another wrt54g, load hyperwrt, and use that as a repeater?

I have a belkin wireless pre-n router and a d-link wireless router, are they easier to convert into repeaters?

Would I just be better off shelling out the 70 bucks for the WRE54G repeater?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
