    Hi everyone,

I want to upgrade my linksys wrt54gs v5 to DD-WRT. However I am confused as whether it's possible or not to revert back to vxworks firmware after switching to DD-WRT.

I am reading the tutorial here:

It does contain a section on manual reversion to vxworks:

    For the WRT54GS v5, v5.1 and v6 ONLY

    1. Download [] and extract.

However, in one place earlier in the tutorial, it also says:

"At the momemnt for GS units this is a one way operation, no reversion back to VxWorks is available."

Is it an out-dated statement? Is the reversion possible now for a wrt54gs v5? Can someone clarify this :) Thanks!

Also, if reversion is not possible for gs units for the moment, there is another note saying:

"Technically speaking, you can use the WRT54G reversion firmware on a WRT54GS. However, your unit will then believe its a WRT54G and accept WRT54G firmwares."

Reading this hint, I wonder if it's possible to:
    1. install DD-WRT WRT54G on my wrt54gs, keep it running as a G unit, and
    2. later revert to vxworks wrt54gs firmware

or in this case I am stuck with G and can only revert to vxworks 54g firmware?

Sorry for the ignorance. I am just starting to learn about DD-WRT. Thanks a lot!

If you followed this tutorial to install DD-WRT, then you can use this tutorial to revert back.

Personally i don't understand why you would want to revert since DD-WRT is faster, more stable and has more features then the crap linksys shoved on the v5 and higher.

unfortunately the link for that reversion file is dead on that site. i am in need of it to do a reversion but unfortunately can't. i emailed the author about it yesterday but haven't received a reply back yet.

Like a slave I followed the step by step upgrade of my WRT54GS v6 to DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/15/06) micro according to scorpionteks instructions and I had no flaws during the upgrade..

On the default firmware I only needed to reboot the router every 3days.. Now Im down to every 30min. Not so impressed.
I lose internetafter about 10min (gets slower and slower), smpt seems to be working just fine as well as wireless LAN but not the http.. I lose password after about 5min after change, its gone, see thread below.

Any hints, Ive been browsing around looking for answers for about two days now and it looks like Im the only one having these issues. what'up with that?

Im really considering to revert back to vxworks unless I can get back my internet some way.. Every 3days is a bit more stabile than every 30min..

    Bad ROuter?

I had a version 6 wrt54gs I bought from Best Buys.. It had a similar problem.. Slow slow and slower... That was with the Linksys firmware.. Linksys was unable to help me after about two weeks.. So I tried DD-WRT it made no difference.. if not made it worse.. I returned it to the store.. Got another V6 and it worked fine out of the box.. That was a month or so ago.. Abouttwo weeks ago I upgraded to DD-WRTV24 beta it is still working fine..

The original Router was defective.. I never tried reverting it.. Since Linksys basically gave up on me anyway and I simply excercized my right to return it...

I am sure they tested it and thru it away or Best buy sold it to someone else.. ?? EVen thought I told them it was defective...

Hope this helps.. Return it while u can...

I also have a V 1.1 and V 4 routers running DD-WRT Latest Version beta.... Great Firmware and great router...
I have never had to REBOOT a router after firmware upgrade with DD-WRT yet .... Some have been running for a long time....
