The serial number on the box of my WRT54GS starts with CGN6 wich means it is a version 4 hardware. The OpenWRT Wiki table says that my machine should have 4 Megs of flash RAM and 16 Megs of RAM. I want to install DD-WRT on it. I wonder if the DD-WRT image will be too big (17 Megs) to install on the WRT54GS and brick it. I want to use DD-WRT with the voip package and have preferably room for more packages.

The 17 MB file has many firmwares in it, each being roughly 3.5 MB.
You can run DD-wrt on that, but you need to first flash to a firmware smaller than 3 MB so download the mini zip file and flash using the generic .bin file. It will work and you can put the std, (standard) on after that.
Be careful though, the V4 routers tend to get "stuck" and not want to upgrade firmware after a flash or two.
