roommate sucking up bandwidth

    hi there.

my roommate in my apartment is ABSOLUTELY hogging the bandwidth from my poor little WRT54G v5.0 (most current firmware is installed). pretty sure he's using file-sharing of some sort... i'd block the ports he's using, but they're far too numerous (and i'm lazy). basically, i don't want to cut off his internet access completely, but i'd like to limit his bandwidth (by means of MAC address if that's possible) to something much slower so that i can actually browse the internet and play my xbox without ridiculous amounts of lag. i'd appreciate any advice you can give.

upgrade to 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt and you can limit his bandwidth utilization. Correction, dd-wrt or any other 3rd party firmware in this forums currently do not support wrt54g v5.0.

I fail to understand why this question keeps coming up.

Why don't people just work out agreements? Who pays the bills? If the room-mate is paying the bill then they have all the leverage. If you are paying some or all then you have to work out agreements. If you shared a phone-line and they were talking on it all the time you would probably TALK to each other about that eh?

Particularly in P2P apps, there are ALWAYS settings for number of connections and how much bandwidth it will use. You could easily set in the P2P client for it to have a max-down of 70% and max-up 50% of your speed-test numbers. Simple, takes like a minute.

Or your could futz around possibly for hours with firmware.

i don't think you understand. my roommate is computer illiterate... which is why i'm admin'ing the network. and he won't let me near his computer, because he knows i'll find all his gay porn or whatnot.

and he's a douchebag. i've already told him how to limit the filesharing since he insists on doing it. however, he seems to think that it's 'too slow' and runs it full blast.

so, i have two options - cut him off from the internet and be really confrontational, or just limit his bandwidth so he thinks 'the internet' is running slow, and avoid conflict altogether. me being somewhat smaller than he is (and the non-violent type) chooses the latter.

thanks sufrano63 for offering some good advice! (instead of flaming me for an option i've already thought of *coughvincentfoxcough*)

Try HyperWRT (Thibor for GS or Tofu for G) 14. If you go to the QoS page you can type in his mac address and set it that way, set upload bandwidth, set up ethernet bandwidth, and it has specific QoS for Bittorrent, EDonkey & eMule, Kazaa, Gnutella, Direct Connect, AppleJuice, WinMX, and Soulseek. For P2P also DNS, FTP, HTTP / HTTPS, POP3, SMTP, SSH, Telnet, Low Ports 1-1023, High Ports 1024-65535, and 12 blank slots.

Whatever, I suppose if he were eating all of your food in the fridge, you'd look the other way on that too?

Here's a quick fix for ya, force a duplex mismatch on his LAN port. That'll slow things down nicely.
