    Hi there,

I had read that is possible to manage or improve the management of a Linksys Router with the Cisco Security Device Manager (SDM).

I had installed the software and tried to access my router, everything seems to go right until the SDM asks for a SSH user and password. I had tried with my admin user and password and admin with blank password or admin as username and password with no success.

Does anybody knows if there is a way to do this?

    Thnaks in advance.

Where did you see this? I did some preliminary checking and cant find any reference to SDM working with linksys. If you can provide a link i will be happy to see what i can find out.

Thats one of the articles i did find and its a little misleading. If you just glance at the article it appears that the author is using SDM with linksys, however if you read it very carefully he simply makes a generalized statement that says most soho devices have a basic firewall that has no advanced features. At this point he goes into how cisco has made a utility that makes advanced configurations on cisco routers much easier then the command line.

As a caveat, since cisco now owns linksys it would be nice to see something designed that would do for linksys routers what the SDM does for cisco. The only issue i see with this on the soho devices is limited memory, though i think i could be more easily implemented on their "buisness" class devices.

so if cisco made a utility for this? how would the development be paid for. I doubt they would make something for nothing.

This is a good question. My initially reasoning is SDM is a free utility if you purchase a cisco router. Why could they not make a similiar utility that is offered for models of linksys routers that are purchased brand new. Do i think this is really going to happen? No, and come to think of it, there may already be some utility out there that will work or can be made to easily work with all linux based firmwares. I know there are some firewall script generators out there.

I think that would be great and obviously boost the value on the "Business" series offer.

One of the purposes that I look for a solution like SDM is the possibility to edit or customize the firewall settings, besides the monitoring tools.

Currently I am using PRTG Traffic Grapher to monitor the bandwidth through the 2 WAN ports and a GW2GW VPN (the free edition could monitor up to 3 SNMP devices/services).

I would like to know if there is a way to do a improved firewall configuration and/or "directly attached" packet and traffic monitoring for the RV082.

    Thanks again!
