SD card mod + overclock - teh secks

    If succesffuly overcloked my wrt54g versoin 3 to 240 mHz, and am getting impressive results off my SD card mod.. 252 kilobytes/second write, 290 for reading... Almost 50% the speed of the mod.

    I wrote a script to make using the sd card wasier on you, and esier on your router to. It only needs to make one write to the flash, and allows you to access the sd card at /mmc (or whatever you want). when the card isnt present, you cant write to /mmc like you oculd if it were a std directory. To use the script its just mmc insert or mmc eject.

    im still working on a writeup and my wrt mods. already have jtag interface, console serial port, and sd card. im going to add power and reset button, as well as a battery pack.

    ok been doing some more tweaks
    ive got my wrt up to 264 mhz (anything higher bircked it) and am now reading and writing to my sd card at 314 kilobytes a second

    ok finally registered for an account :p

    ive been playing with the cpu clock, and have found some strange things... anyways, im getting 330 kilobytes/second read, 331 write...

    lemme try and sort out the deal with the cpu clocks and i'll let you guys know what to do...

    it would be cool fi the cpu was overlocked in dd-wrt, or i think it is right?

    You can overclock it yourself.

    The command to OC your WRT is
    nvram set clkfreq=Value goes here default is 200
    Be carefull high freq will brick your router.

    Overclocking, jtag, serial ports, sd cards, danged these things are fun toys!

    But, tell you what... if someone can come up with a way to hang a few digital io ports, even just a parallel port, or better yet maybe a 1-wire (Dallas Semiconductor) bus on one of these things, and it would REALLY be great!

    Actually you can. Kinda-sorta. The CPU supports it. You just need the controller and the kernel mod.

    I don't know about that. It is a router, not a all in one box. I preffer to use it to get data from point A to point B.
    The CPU is slow to serve as a file server, print server, scan server, surveilance server.... it is possible, yes, but not without sacrifice of horse power. And as we all know, the WRT54G(s) is everything, but powerful.

    my wrt is pretty fast, but thats because ive overclocked one clock, and underclocked the other, yielding an increase in read/write speeds on the sd card from 200 kilobytes/second to over 330.

    as for adding usb, im loking in to it. the cpu DOES support it, the question is, can we even get to the correct pins on the cpu? and which pins are they? etc etc.. Without a datasheet for the cpu im kinda stuck

    as for adding 1wire support, you could add a basic stamp ( ) to a serial port, and use that to interface 1wire.

    i plan on doing somehting similar ;)

    there is a data sheet. one user i think that he is malfeasance he know this stuff and can get data sheets for the amd chip,

    Added connectivity is not what a WRT54G needs. It's already got 5 100Mbps Ethernet ports! (And a serial port, though realistically that is only good for use as a console while doing development that could wedge the networking.)

    What would be fun is to compete with the Stamp and other similar embedded microprocessors. They are all using woefully under powered microprocessors running very limited operating systems. The WRT54G has a 200 Mhz MIPS cpu running full blow Linux! The potential is there to just blow away the current base of single board computer systems. A motherboard just like that in the WRT54G, except with only 2 ethernet ports and replace the wireless and bridge hardware with i/o and analog-digital converters, would be an order of magnitude more capable than existing systems.

    Hence a mod for the WRT54G that added even a small part of that (just the i/o, though the a/d would neat to have), would be impressive.

    I'm fairly new to this site, but it doesn't take long to get the gears grinding in my head. :) What you said above would be awesome! :D I work with industrial controllers and microcontrollers, such as the stamp, but to transform a WAP into an all-in-one controller with wireless access would be great! I just have to get out of the newbie ranks of Linux and C Programming.

    BASIC Stamps are overpriced and the BASIC language compilers for PIC's (the processor used in a basic stamp) are poorly constructed, and waste precious ram (16-32k avail usually).

    I would suggest using a PIC ( ), an oscillator, and a couple of diodes which will run you roughly 20% of the cost of the BASIC Stamp ($<10 vs $50+ for a basic stamp). PICs are programmable with regular C, much better than BASIC imho.

    Maybe Linksys will make an all-in-one router in the future, because Ovislink, Asus, Netgear, etc... already have a cheap linux based routers that support print server, file storage, webcams, VPN, etc...
