Selected sites fail through router

I cannot access some sites (,
through my router. Other sites (yahoo, cnn, comcast) work fine. However, if I remove the router and connect directly to the cable modem, everything works fine. I cannot think of any reason why connecting through the router would affect only certain sites. We have had the same setup for years; the problem with selected sites started yesterday.

    My router is a Linksys BEFSR41, with firmware 1.46.02 (Aug 3, 2004). A
Linksys switch (EZXS55W) is connected to the router. The cable modem
is a Terayon TJ615. Our ISP is Comcast. The network has five computers with various operating systems (W2000, XP Pro, XP Home, XP Media). All five have the same problem. I have powered everything down (and left it off at least a minute) multiple times. I have reset the router (held reset button for five seconds).

I have also tried using my Vonage router (Linksys RTP300) instead of
    the BEFSR41, with no improvement.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

No problem from my private LAN to access those two sites. Perhaps, you will need to factory reset your router. WARNING! If you factory reset your router, all of its configurations will be replaced with factory default settings. So, you will need to remember which settings for which features. I don't recommend to do a backup/restore after the factory reset.

either the MTU is incorrect (for cable it should be 1500) or the DNS or proxy cache your ISP uses maybe at fault. Since you have tried two different types of routers you get the same problem, so my guess it is elsewhere on the system

I already reset my router to the factor defaults. Tonight I tried connecting with my work computer, through the router, but using my office VPN and proxy server. The sites work fine. However, if I connect from the same computer without the proxy server, I cannot reach the two sites.

What does MTU mean, and how would I check its setting?

I have thought that some DNS cache could be corrupt, but I cannot figure out why I would get different results when using the router rather than connecting directly to the cable modem.

I decided the Linksys BEFSR41 was defective. When I replaced it, everything works fine.

    Thanks for your help.
