Sharing w/Neighbor

Discussion in 'Networking Issues' started by threebadwheels, Feb 16, 2005.

  1. I have a new neighbor. He just bought the townhome next to mine. He has a computer with a wireless cisco card. He has no internet because he is financially handicapped. He would like to use my wrt54gs access point because he can see it however he can't access it. Thank you WEP. I wouldn't mind extending him use of my internet through my ap however I don't want him to roam around my network. I have one wired and 3 wireless computers on my network plus a wireless print server. I would like to REALLY isolate him from my network completely. I access my work on a regular basis and I have a lot of private financial information on my computers. I am concerned about his habits when it comes to updating windows and virus protection. And him being able to see my browsing habits and vise versa. What can I do to accommodate him?

I would not accommodate any unless I REALLY trust!!

What if he is a spammer, hacker or....etc??

What if he uses your connection to do any sort of fraudulent activities??

What if he uses your internet to deal with child pornography?

    What if.....What if....etc

At the end you are the only one who would be under investigation!

Frankly it is very risky to do so unless you trust your neighbor...

He has the means to buy a house (ok, townhome), but is too financially handicapped to subscribe to the Internet, even if it is cheap dial-up access? Sorry, but on the face of it I don't buy his story.

    Setup permissions on your shares.

I leave my access wide open to all. Unless its game time...

If you really want to share.. Then through a third party firmware, like HyperWRT or Satori on his box, so you can turn it into a wirless client or AP. Not sure on the term. Please correct as needed. Then I believe if his router has a different IP range, then they won't be able to "see" your computers. Please search the forums for this as it has been discussed many times. Look for WDS, Seperate networks, Subnets, etc...

I am sure there are others here that can help you if you want to go down this road. But the first replier (Dowunda), has it right.. What if this guy does something seriously wrong.. Do you want the FBI at your front door step?
