Hi there; found you via googling :D

    right my specs:

    WRT54G v1.0 with firmware 1.42.2

Should I upgrade this to the current [2005] version of WRT54G_4.20.8 ???

What are the for's and against's about upgrading? [- found my router to be V1.0 via the FAQ section.]

That's a question only you can truly answer. Are you having any problems or needing functionality the new firmware adds or fixes? Do you need or want 3rd party firmware and is it written on the newer or older code? Are you willing to accept the fact there is a very small chance you upgrade could go wrong and turn your router into a door stop? These are all the types of questions you need to ask yourself and then move on from there.

In the future, dont do any upgrades from a wireless connection. I am a fly by the seat of my pants sorta fella and love flirting with danger but even i dont upgrade from a wireless connection. As to your question, somewhere within the webpage you will find a tab or settings box to change the password, by default i do not believe you can change the username. Though there are several 3rd party firmwares that allow this functionality (from what i have heard).

Now dont misundertand me about the wireless, you can make setting changes all day and night without issue, its just during firmware upgrades you want to be hard wired to the unit.
