My configuration is cable modem>WRT54GL>RT31P2. I have a Dell8100 desktop hanging off a ethernet port of the 54 and a E1505 laptop wireless to the 54. The 31 supports my Vonage phone. When I run a speed test on the desktop and laptop my download speed is always faster with the desktop. The upload speeds are about equal. Is it normal for a ethernet/desktop to be faster then a wireless connection ?

Of course, when connected directly you have no interference opposed to wireless which has many limitations like distance, too many obstructions, other wireless signals etc all which will impede the speed and also if you enable encryption that too will have a slight performance decrease due to the overhead of the encryption. If you must use wireless, but if you want a solid connection and faster speed use wired.

Thanks for the reply. I guess it makes sense. For me the convenience of the wireless laptop outweighs the speed difference. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something.
