is it normal, that the linksys WRT54G is much slower at the connection to an ISP compared to a Dlink Router?

Shouldn't be, but there are a number of factors that determine how fast your router logs in to your ISP. But you'll need to provide a lot more information just to get started.

What kind of connection do you have? Cable? DSL?

Does it require specific MAC addresses, and are you spoofing MAC or using the MAC on the actual device?

Are you restarting your Internet modem in the process of swapping out the routers?

What model of WRT54G are you using, and what firmware version? How do you have it set up to connect to your ISP? What happens, step by step, when you try to connect? Where does it appear to be slowing down, if you can tell?

What model of D-Link are you using? How do you have it set up to connect to your ISP?

I use the WRT54G 2.2 with the original and the hyperwrt-firmware in Germany on the DSL-Net of Versatel (DSL 6000). The dlink is a DI-524. When I connect on demand with the dlink I get a connection in less than one second, with the linksys I need two or more seconds and sometimes he doesn't recognice that I want a connection to the Internet.
