Stability issue with VPN Server (?)

    Hello All,

    I am currently facing stability issues with Tomato Toastman, and it seems to be related to the VPN server.

    Here's some context. I am running Tomato Toastman 1.28.0501 on an ASUS RT-N16 for about a month now. Everything quite stable. I'm using many of the great features, like the VPN client to connect to the office, QOS, guest wireless access, etc. All without any issues.

    Then, this week, I started to configure a VPN server, so that I can get into my network from iPad & iPhone. I had issues with the GUI. I could not enter a port number, everytime I saved, go elsewhere and go back, port field was blank. I reboot the router, and I see that Tomato lost all of its configuration. Back to defaults.

    I started to reconfigure everything from scratch, first VPN Server; OK, then VPN client, same issue! I cannot complete the configuration, it does not keep the port number I enter.

    I restart configuration again, but this time, I clear the NVRAM first (just in case). In an attempt to reproduce the problem and report it, I start with the VPN client first... and it works (?), the VPN server, and it also works. I take a backup and leave it that way, both VPN client and server work well for a day. Yesterday evening, I configure DDNS, adjust my ovpn config file to connect to host name instead of IP. All is good.

    This morning; No connection. Stop/Start VPN client, no connection. I reboot the router, and it lost it's config once again!

    For now, I cleared NVRAM and restored the clean backup I had made after my last config, which only has VPN client and VPN server configured (No DDNS, no QOS, no nothing else).

    Have you right time conifigured on both routers? It's a must ! There is no problem with sever or client in 0501 or 105 I have used them for many months with no dropouts or errors. Look in openvpn config example many thing have been change since last update to 2.3 version.
    If you have some wrong parameters then it not get saved or started, It's a must to use different port on same router if you use server/client

    Yes, I have configured time correctly on the client. I can't confirm for the server though, as I don't have access to it, but I would be surprised if it was configured wrong. I mean, me and several other users have used the VPN server for a long time. If it was a time issue, maybe it would not connect. But this would not clear the whole router configuration!

    For the client, I have to use port 1180 to connect to the server.
    For the server, I have tried 1194, and also other ports. It looked like the GUI would not save it... but only when the VPN client was previously configured. When I started from scratch, and starter to configure the VPN server first, it was ok.

    I don't use "custom configuration" for the client, neither for the server. Maybe the server is pushing params it would not like, but I have been running with the client at least for a month without issues. It's only when I try to configure the server.

    Tested and it works great with shibby 105.1 on asus rt-16n

    What could trigger a config to be reset? On the 3 occasions it happened, it lost everything. I could tell immediatly by the change of the theme.

    Perhaps bad RAM? or NVRAM? Is there a way to test it on an ASUS RT-N16?

    If it's not the firmware, I figure it must be the hardware.

    I'm using Firefox, always up top date, on Windows, and I never use any others. Unless a firefox update could be the cause, it's probably not the cause.

    I keep experiencing issues with the config being wiped-out, but I believe I found the root cause: NVRAM size.

    I noticed this message in the Administration/Backup configuration page:

    Total / Free NVRAM:32.00 KB / 1032 (3.15%)

    "The NVRAM free space is very low. It is strongly recommended to erase all data in NVRAM memory, and reconfigure the router manually in order to clean up all unused and obsolete entries."

    I read a bit on the subject, but there does not seem to be an easy way to circumvent this.
