I'm desesperated trying to get this to work... no luck until now.

    NSLU2 firmware: NSLU2_V23R25
    OS: WinXP
    PC name: EMC
Shared directory in the PC: personaldata
    Directory permissions: full control, everybody
(I know, I'll have to change this, but I want to get backups working first!)

This is what I have indicated at the Backup Job screen:

    Share: DISK1
    Sub folder: /
    Name: EMC
    Shared Folder: /personaldata

But I keep getting the message: "... cannot connect to file server '//EMC/personaldata'... "

I even tried to change the name to the PC's IP, but then the message is still "... cannot connect to file server '//'... "

I think the backup in the nslu2 is from disk 1 to disk 2 backup not from a computer on the network, or are you just tring to copy and paste it?

Give a little more detailed info on what you want to do

hi ajnodine, thnks for your interest

Linksys is saying that "...of course you can backup to a device other than disk 2 at the NSLU2..."

What I am trying to do is to backup the data disk from a server which is on the LAN (and in the same workgroup than the NSLU2!!!) to a USB disk which I plugged to the NSLU2. I know I could just plug the USB disk directly to the server and full stop, but the server is in another room in the company and our office is too far away (we're 'supposed to be' the technical people!) so using this Linksys gadget is the only solution.

    just copy and paste it

or I think you can get software for the server to set it up for auto backup

FWIW, I've used True Image to image one drive (my laptop) to a disk attached to my NSLU. Works just fine. You should also be able to use the standard windows backup.

If it cannot be found by name, can you find it by IP? Perhaps your machine is not doing NetBIOS lookups? Can you ping it by name and by IP?

    Here's mine

    I have mine set to backup to a PC via the network, so essentially the reverse of what you are trying to do, but the settings should remain;

    This NSLU2 Share: DISK1
    Sub Folder:

    Other device Name:
    Shared folder: \BackupSharedDriveG\SLUGBackup

    Thanks for your contribution.
How the heck can you use \ instead of / ????. The NSLU2 manual insists that / must be used... and when trying to use \ it does not recognize the path...?????

Can't say, but it works and mine doesn't throw it out, so I would guess it is not the \ that is causing your issue. I assume that a \ is used as you are pointing the device at a local drive (as you are using the PC to set it up) and the NSLU2 must do the re-jigging of that path once it is set internally to a network path it is happy with.
