I finished to build a wireless network on a building. The network diagram is the follow:

Internet => WRT54G v.3 as router /DHCP => 24 Ports Linksys switch => in each floor i have a WRT54G as an access point (all of the APs are connected in cascade).
All work perfect but i want to see the trafic via MRTG and to enable SNMP i know that i have to put other firmwares like sveasoft, ddwrt or others.
I see in the forum that someone commented this:
"sveasoft and ddwrt currently contain bugs that reduce wireless throughput to a about 1/3 the offical firmware."

Is that right ? cause i don´t want to reduce the throughtput of the router cause its going to affect all the network. Can someone advice me what can i do ?.

These are not really bugs. One reason for this is, that they have to use more recent broadcom wlan drivers to be compatible with new hardware versions of the WRT54G(S). And the new drivers pretty much suck compared to the old ones. As the drivers are binary only, not much can be done to change this.

Another reason is, that these firmware flavours have much more features than the standard Linksys firmware. More features -> more overhead/cpu load -> less speed.

you will only see a speed drop if you are tranfersing huge files like a few GB. but if you are just browsing the web then no you will not see a real performence decrease.

Not only when you are just transfering huge files. Surfing the web wireless period. The wireless with both of these firmwares is horrible and slow. It seems that the latest DD-WRt Pre5 wirelss is worst than before.

I see. There are all kind of opinions. I have a really big doubt now :) , i really need to monitor the network via mrtg but i don´t want to affect the members that are connected because they paying me all months for the service and if i don´t give them good service they gonna kill me. There are not big transfering files over the LAN, actually there are not transfering, they only use the service to browse on the web, check emails, etc.
I guess that more opinions will help me to decide what to do.
Maybe we can create a poll ? :)

if you use dd-wrt for your clients they will not be @ snail like speeds.

i still get about 54-24 mbps.

if you are not a risk taker, hyperwrt i heard still gets speeds like linksys stock firmware.

i can still tranfer a 1GB file accross my wlan form one wireless to wird pc in about 15min. i dont know what the linksys firmware will do.
