Switch ports running at 10Mb full

    new to this forum, but have seen some good stuff here.

    I have a problem with my WAG54G switch - the ports are not autonegotiating to 100Mb but are fixed at 10Mb full. Does anyone know if there is a way to get directly to the config to change this?

    I have upgraded to WAG54G_AnnexA_ETSI_v1.02.7_03 but this makes no difference.

    They should be autonegotiating,

    What category cabling do you have? You need at least CAT5 cabling.

    CAT5e is recommended.

    Also check your Network adaptors (on you PC) properties. make sure these rate is set to Auto.

    Well, I'm definitely using CAT5, and strangely enough, the reason I know that the ports are stuck is that the network adapters in my system are normally set to 100 full - then some glitch hit the WAG and it stopped talking on the ethernet ports. The only reason I know that it is stuck on 10Mb is by setting the net card in my laptop through auto and then to 10Full, which is when it started talking again. Wierd, huh?

    yeah it is a bit, did you try a hard reset of the router? i know you will loose your settings but maybe some setting is conflicting with the LAN port and forcing the LAN speed so how.

    so you have a fix now yes?

    On my french Linksys users forum, a lot of members are reporting this trouble and are doing a RMA...
    That seems to be a ageing problem...

    HI Speed,

    what do you mean by an ageing problem? Is it that the switch circuitry gets futzed up after a while with the unit running hot?


    Soft reset, hard reset, even thought about a hammer and chisel reset :)

    Until today this issue is for WAG54G 1.2 and probably due to the temperature...

    Hi all,

    wisden - how old is you WAG54G?? is it around 2yrs or so??

    hiSpeed - there may well be something in the ageing thing if wisdens is around 2yrs old or so -

    see following post for mine, and another members problems:


    both on v1.2 WAG54G and all 2yrs old or so

    just done another look around and found this post also


    again, OPs WAG is a v1.x and around 2yrs old

    Anyone spotting a pattern

    Mine is almost 2 years old but as it works with a fan on top in summer, may be its lifetime will be... 2 years and one month... :wink:

    wag54g V1.X always have this trouble, mines currently set at 10mbpsfull :( not long brought this router second hand and unsure of its age but upon reading these forums i found these problems.

    I am having similar problems with mine, i keep getting network cable disconnected messages when the cable is connected, changed my NIC card and cable, still the same.

    Have had my WAG54 approx 2yrs also.

    Has always been a crap piece of kit since i bought it, wireless never worked have been using it wired from the first week.

    I have e-mailed Tech Support for a replacement, will see what they say.

    I wont buy a linksys again.

    Yeah, I spotted a pattern... 2 years then death :sick:

    Linksys seem to know there is a problem with this model. They told me they don't have any "replacement devices" for the WAG54G in stock just now.

    Why am I not surprised by that?

    I hear it's capacitors that dry out, as there is no fan on the board. One guy replaced them, and it fixed his WAG54G. I have the technical ability to attempt the repair, but it has a 3 year manufacturer's warranty (says so right on the box I kept) and I so don't want to void that.

    I have exacty the same problem with my router as this thread. First my printer had to go down to 10Mb/s to work - I almost retuned the printer!

    Now ALL my wired ports will only work at 10Mb/s full duplex. Can't get them to auto negotiate, or get any reliable 100Mb/s connections.

    WAG54G v1.2 (UK model)
    Flashed from 1.02.1 WAG54G_AnnexA_ETSI_v1.02.1_09_code.bin
    up to 1.02.5 WAG54G_AnnexA_ETSI_v1.02.5_07_code.bin
    Today to try and fix it, even did a factory reset.

    No luck. Everything works again, except no the 100Mb/s ethernet!

    Oh, and it is around 2 years old. Bought Jul 2004, so 2 yrs and a few months use. Wireless never worked that well, OK in the same room, but what's the point of that?

    I've raised a case with linksys, done an RMA request and am hopeful for a better replacement.

    nice 1 peeps - I had EXACT same problem, purchased router in October 2004. Have already replaced router anyway, but will RMA and get myself a freebie to sell on ebay! :biggrin:

    I did the same failure like you to buy me a wag54g from eb*y (imo the first version, because there is no version information a the bottom of the device). At first i had the problem to get a running network connection with the integrated switch. I found the trick here in the forum to switch the network device to 10MBit-FD. So I was able to configure the router, finally... Next problem was the usable internet bandwidth. I couldn't surf with more than 4-15kb/sec. The latest firmware (Firmware Version: 1.02.7) fixed the problem. That really sucks, it took me hours to...

    Ok, the first problem is only fixed with a dirty workaround. Did any1 get response from linksys how much the repair would cost? Because I don't know the date of manufacturing. Is it possible to find out the date with the SN or MAC of the router? Perhaps the router is still in warranty.

    erm nobody hispeed lol

    they all die, mine is now no longer and i have a WAG54GS, but going to replace the capacitors on the wag and see if that solves it as mentioned in others posts

    Wag54g V1.2 Rma

    My WAG54G V1.2 failed after about 2 years - speed dropped to 10M on the wired ports.

    I went the RMA route and got a refurbished WAG354GS V2 that has been working OK for the last 3 months.

    I had no real trouble getting the RMA number so I guess it wasn't an unusual report .........

    i have now brought a WAG54GS and its working flawlessly :d

    gonna use the WAG54G V1.2 as a wireless repeater as it has the capability for WDS :D

    i Have since replaced the capacitor that supply's the pll to the switch chip and now have my WAG working at full speed :)

    its fairly easy to sort and mine took me about 15 minutes to change, i will now be buying a couple of said routers off ebay and repairing them.

    Thanks guys this is really useful information. I purchased a WAG54G v2 in June 05 and sure enough around July 07 I had the same fault. Initially the problem was the Ethernet connection dropping out which was irritating but reduced by nailing the PC to 10Mb. This turned out to be just temporary and the fault returned with the performance of the router falling to around 128Kbps on the ADSL download. The performance of the router deteriorated further with it unable to establish the ppp logon when re-booted if my PC was connected (due to the LAN link going up and down the whole time although it would logon with the PC disconnected). The Ethernet ports are now completely dead, but the wireless still works, not that it is any use without the LAN ports. I’ll give it a go replacing the capacitors (I threw away the packaging who expects a solid state device to fail after just two years) The wireless performance was disappointing so it’ll probably end up on ebay. What is the spec of the capacitors and how many are needed?

    I've seen detailed instructions for capacitor replacement over on Aus whirlpool forums - i'll let you search! The Aus WAG54GV2 has more flash/ram than EU but suspect the board and switch capacitors are similar.

    My WAG54G

    I have the same problem also but I set the computers connecting to the ports to 10meg full, worked for a time but one day came home and found that the power led is red solid.

    nothing works on it now.

    I can ping it and ftp to it thats all.

    tried flash with adam2 and tftp.exe says it flash ok but power led is still full on red
    It is about 2 years old too
