I couldn't find this problem anywhere else so I hope I'm not repeating someone else's question.

I have 2 nslus both hooked up to 250GB Lacie USB drives. one works as a file store while the other backs it up overnight. I have a second one due to the fact that the nslu2 must be switched off to change the disks, and I wanted the first to be available at all times.

My problem is, everytime I switch off the backup unit, the time resets to 1st January 1970. I've updated the firmware to r63, but the problem persists. The first unit doesn't seem to suffer the same issue.

Do I have a faulty unit or is there something I can do about this? any ideas?

That sounds like a faulty unit. The internal clock in the NSLU2 is supposed to be battery backed up with a lithium coin battery just like on your PC's so that it retains the correct time.

If that battery was dead or dislodged from its clip so electrical contact was broken, the NSLU2 would reset to the Linux beginning date, 1st January 1970, everytime it was powered down.

So this could be something as simple as a battery problem or something far worse.

Why worry about the internal clock which really isn't used for anything anyway.
If the unit is defective thats one thing but to beat yourself up over the clock........
