Unable to customize WRTP54G settings

I'm having an issue with my WRTP54G Vonage VoIP router. About a week ago (7/14) I had my alarm company come in and install a CO monitor. They said it needed to go through my VoIP router and that I should try to remove the encryption (something I don't plan to do but, I wanted to make sure it would work, I'm going to sell the house soon). I went and reset the router (using the reset button) and forgot that the last time I had done that was a pain the rear because I have a v. 1.0 Range Expander that was super hard to configure. So I went out and bought a version 3 instead.

I followed all the directions and got things installed. After the first time I tried to customize my router settings (things like changing the IP, channel, security settings, etc.) I cannot connect to the Internet through my router on any other settings than the default. I can get to the router and the range expander just fine, but not out to the Internet. If I reset the router and range expander (and I have to connect a hard wire to the RE so that I can configure it to work in the same IP subclass) it works beautifully. Flawless. But the moment I try to change the SSID or IP or anything else, I can no longer connect to the Internet. The problem with this is that my wireless is not secure any longer. Not an option for me.

I've called tech support and they didn't help much, in fact, used settings that I didn't want AT ALL (like my phone number...why in the world would I use my publicly available phone number as a numeric WEP key???). No offense, but I'm tired of talking to people that I can't understand in order to help me with my very technical problems. Might as well be speaking a different language.
