So I have tried unsuccessfully to upgrade a WRT54G v5 and was wondering if anyone has been successful.

The Gross anatomy tells us that CDFA in the serial # should indicate that this is a v5.

I have attempted to use the web interface to upgrade the firmware to FreemanBasic 1.04, Sveasoft, and hyperWRT 2.0_G.

I get the lovely grammatically incorrect error message "Upgrade are Failed!!"

I need to be able to get this router to work in a WDS mode.

Most likely it is v.4 not 5.

Did you try TFTP upgrade? I saw a posting by BrainSlaying that he was going to test DD-WRT v.23 on WRT54G v.4. Check if he reported his findings.

From my understanding, after v3, the WRT54G's have linksys firmware 4.x.x. The version 4 firmware have something written in them that check to see if the new firmware being upgraded is from Linksys. If not it fails.

I've found out that if you downgrade to the latest version 3 firmware from linksys, you can then upgrade that to a 3rd party. However, be very careful as to make sure the firmware will work before trying to flash it (linksys and any 3rd party included). I bricked one of mine before I knew this.
