Upgrading old routers

I recently bought at an auction a bunch of wireless routers of the B kind including a few Netgears and Belkins. They all work fine, except a tad outdated in terms of security. All of them cannot be upgraded to WPA so they are pretty much useless when it comes to strong security.

I also have a bunch of PII machines around. So I am thinking of using them in conjunction with these antiquated wireless routers. There are BYO routers like Smoothwall. I have never used them. How realistically easy to set up something like this? That is, using the wireless routers as dummy wireless pass-through transceivers while let the PC handle all the security with the likes of WPA? Can anyone recommend a solution out there?
