This might sound a little off the topic but I'm still going to ask:

Did anyone notice any important difference between K2.6 (*.86XX series) and K2.4 (*.85XX series) versions for MIPSR1 routers (WRT54g-TM for ex.)?

I heard only a couple of people talking about how WAN to WLAN and generally WLAN performance seems to be (s)lower on K2.6...

In couple of coming days I'm planing to upgrade (finally) my WRT54G-TMs to non USB/VPN flavor (the usual RAF) so I would appreciate all and any thought you people might have...

    Thanks in advance!

Yes, you're right, I have some figures that might help you to choice (using iperf & jperf)

    Tomato RAF 1.25.8025 (Kernel 2.4.22) WAN-LAN 85M
    Tomato RAF 1.25.8515 (Kernel 2.4.22) WAN-LAN 58M
    Tomato RAF 1.28.8515 (Kernel 2.4.37) WAN-LAN 38M
    Tomato RAF 1.28.8615 (Kernel WAN-LAN 30M

About WLAN, the measures are related to the wifi adaptor you use, I got for all the releases 2,4-2,5M without problem.

    Best Regards!

Wow! 85M down to 38M/30M. That's a shocker. Is there anything which can be done about it? Is there any hope the 1.28 versions can be speeded up?

The newer the kernel, the more demanding it is to hardware resources.
So for routers with slower CPU and less than 32M of RAM it's better to stay on K24-based builds unless you specifically need K26 (because of some bug fixes and/or added functionality).

The newer routers (such as Asus RT-N16, Netgear WNR-3500L, newer Linksys N routers) with more powerful CPUs and more memory can cope with 2.6 much better - see some test results here and here.

Thanks for the explanation tb. I guess I'm expecting too much from my Buffalo's. (Sorry for sounding so surprised).

I'm not sure if this is bug or not (or am I missing something):
I use 1.28.8525ND+VPN version on WRT54G and I don't see the option to enable following in the Administration->Admin Access->Open Menus:
    IP/MAC BW Limiter
    VPN Tunneling

    Whoa, what a decrease!
Is stock Tomato also affected by that lowered performance from 1.25 to 1.28?
Just learned that stock Tomato 1.28 has the Linux Kernel 2.4.20. Interesting.

With patches form 2.4.22 , but who cares about revisions?, let's talk about performance

Performance. Seems like you maxed out the older routers and it has decreased. Not the fault of you. The hardware is just old. So far working great for me though other then that. If there are any bugs. None have hit me yet.

@Victek I'm a fan of your mod. Can you please add a Block All Websites Except Feature? Or a White/Black Lists. e.g. Block All Websites Except 1. 2. Many thanks!

For the last 48 hours i've been running both 8515 and 8615 (kernels 2.4 and 2.6) on quite demanding home network (well not as big as Toastman's but still) - both releases have been tortured by 7 clients simultaneously, 3 wired, 3 wireless and 1 NAS - almost all of them (xcept me) are heavy P2Pers and with help from Toastman's QoS - I have NOTHING to report... Well done Vic (again)!

There is only already mentioned issue with running Yaqui ad-block script on kernel 2.6 - it won't load and it wont work... any fixes yet? some other script?

    Better timekeeping with this firmware?

    Hi All,

I've been using this release for about 11 days now. All is working nicely. One thing I have noticed is that this router (WRT54GS V4) is keeping much better time than previous firmwares. This router used to lose 10-12 seconds per day, and now it is gaining 1-2 seconds per day. Pertinent log message shown below (I only update time once per day):

    Tomato v1.28.8515 _RAF ND Std

Note that I'm not complaining, I was just curious if there was a known fix and/or using the newer kernel which may have made the timekeeping better. Though I do miss the ntpc update I did which provided fractional second updates as well... :)

Thanks again Vic for another nice release!

I was hoping that someone might clarify the speed issues with the newer releases and older routers. I have a Linksys WRT54GS v.3, wl0_corerev=9, clkfreq=216 currently using Tomato_RAF_1.25.8515.2-ND, and I must say it runs like a charm...THANK YOU Victek!

Does the newer firmware slow internet speeds, sharing over the network between computers, or is it just an overall slowdown?

I've downloaded tomato.RAF-K24-1.28.8515_lite.trx, but haven't installed it yet. I'm mostly concerned with the internet speed. Which Victek release would be best for my router, stick with the old, or go with the new? If the 1.28 series is OK, should I try Kernel 2.6, or is that mainly for the newer N routers?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

    Donation page in Spanish only?

I have been using your mods for quite some time now, and wanted to make a donation to show my appreciation. But I was a little leery because of the Spanish only web page. I can deduce most of the Spanish things, but the one item I desire clarification on is the currency. I'm assuming it is Euro's, but it's best to be clear. I wouldn't want any nasty surprises... :) Also, could US Dollars be an option?

Thanks again for a nice mod.
  17. Toastman

Toastman Super Moderator Staff Member Member

SteelersFANinMA - if it is primarily speed you need, stick with Kernel 2.4 which is generally accepted to be rather faster then 2.6. And also, many posts and tests have suggested that 8515.2 had about the fastest throughput of the 2.4 compiles. If you need more speed, then the way to go is to upgrade to a newer faster router such as the RT-N16 etc. There's also a version of it on my site below which has a few extra goodies bolted on from TomatoUSBmod.

Can someone please post the default rates for the qos classes found in QoS -> Basic Settings?

I did a lot of customization and don't want to lose it by erasing nvram.

I too had difficulty sending Vic a Donation but finally used his email address through Paypal to send a donation. It worked fine and Euro's is what you want to send, however, you can change it to US Dollars and Paypal will do the conversion for you! Good luck.

Sorry if this is answered already somewhere in this 23 page thread, but is there a "guide" somewhere on how to use some of the features of these unique Victek features? e.g. IPv6 tunneling, ARP binding, OpenVPN setup??
  24. Victek

    Victek Network Guru Member

IPv6 and OpenVPN are not RAF features and are also present in the tomatousb. ARP binding (RAF feature) is simple to use, enter the machines you like to WOL and then activate the function. Tick disabled for not listed machines if you like to exclude all the other equipment.

I would like to upgrade my current router running a very old version of Tomato (1.19...) because I have some problem with the WDS support between this router and a tp-link .

Because of my router isn't easily accessible physically, I need to be sure that after the upgrade the wi-fi will be switched on. It is true?

Also, my router is a SparkLAN WX-6615GT, wl0_corerev=7, so it is better to use ND version or not, I'm currently using normal version, considering my needs for a stable wds configuration?

    Thank You in advance!

    Thank you for your answer.

So you recommend a non-ND version?

I've seen inside the "" just a .bin file, while i.e. inside the "tomato.RAF-K24-1.28.8515_lite.trx.7z" there is a .trx file. I remember that when i flashed some time ago my 1.19 version, i used the .trx version of rom inside the official tomato distribution. It is the same?

What about "" with 2.6 kernel?

Thank you again and sorry for my questions but I'm scared to brick my router!

I recommended the stable release for your wl_core revision, you can try K2.6 of course but then I have some doubt about wireless performance, that's all.

Guys, I have a strange issue.
Just installed Tomato RAF 1.28.121006 and everything works fine except one ver annoying problem:

    - everytime I open Google Chorme the log-in window from the router pops up asking me for username and password...
This happes everytime! Even when I open a new tab... same window pops up.

    Any help on this? thanks!

PS: some good configuration settings available for the firmware? Mainly for basic surfing + heavy P2P (torrents)
