WAN bandwith drops, I can't figure it out.

    I have a WRT54GL with Tomato 1.28; I'm using it for years.
    In these weeks I'm facing with bandwith drops, without loosing WAN connection.
    The issue is confirmed with other machines on my LAN, all of them connected via ethernet cables (No WLAN adapters are used).

    Look at my screenshots, taken when downloading kubuntu iso.
    My standard download bandwith is approximately 700 KB/s.
    There are holes in the bandwith graph;
    surfing the internet is impossible when this behavior happens: connection time out in firefox.
    I must wait; it is very struggling.

    reading Tomato logs I can say that WAN doesn't go down.
    It seems normal.
    Could be ISP, modem, or router w/ tomato?

    Below: Real-time Bandwith screenshots (yesterday).
    Today seems that it's all ok.

    With something like that a hardware defect is your best bet. Check for problems with wiring first. Maybe it's that simple. Try another router and another modem. As rare as it might be, ethernet ports can fail, too. A lot of modems have diagnostic interfaces that can be reached via web or special software. Find out what your modem supports. Newer versions of Tomato let you access your modem behind a router.
