I am having the same problem with a wap54g v3 and wrt54g v5. I cannot get the wap communicate to the wrt in wireless repeater mode.

Contact Linksys support and let them know. I'm having this problem and I told them about it and they don't seem to believe me. They said that they haven't heard of anyone else with this problem. I'm working on downgrading my WAP to see if that will help. I don't know if that's even possible. But, no one here seems to know what's going on either.

Well, I'm going to hammer linksys until it works. I've been fighting this for over a week now and I'm at my wits end!

Also, downgrading does NOT work. I bricked the WAP.

Copy of mail sent to Linksys

Remarks: for the sake of troubleshooting no Encryption was applied

    Procedure followed:
    1. Upgraded both devices to latest firmware available (18/01/2006)
    2. Followed the instructions found on FAQ ID: 231 "Setting up a WAP54G as a wireless repeater with a WRT54G" to no avail.
    3. Applied instructions found in FAQ 1507 "Getting The WRE54G To Connect With The WRT54G, WRT54GS, or WAP54G" concerning the WAP54G v1 and firmware upgrade telling the version 1.09.1 must be installed before any other firmware upgrade then progressively upgrade to 2.07 then 3.04, each time applying instruction on FAQ ID: 231 to no avail.

    So what's next?

It seems I am not the only one struggling with the WRT54G v5 and the repeater mode ( see http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=52574#52574 )

Thank you in advance for your help in this matter,

Well, this seems to be a problem. I have the same equipment, and am having the same problem.

I hope this is fixed soon. I got this router and AP assumig the repeater mode would work.

Looks like linksys just released a firmware upgrade for the version 5 WRT54G Router that seems to have fixed my repeater problem.

    Firmware 1.00.6 Solved my problem

    True, it works.

After upgrading the firmware to 1.00.6, eventually, repeater mode is functionning. But I was unable to use WAP encryption, it simply did not work, therefore I used WEP instead, and miracle!!! it works.

I also have problems with WAP54G and Repeater Mode.

I have two WAP54G running with WPA encryption. The first one is setup as an Access Point and is wired to the my network. This one works perfectly.

I want to enhance my range on my Wireless Network so I install a wap54G in Repeater Mode. I set the Channel, SSID, Encryption to the excact same as my first access point. But no luck, the repeater does not work.

I am running Firmware 3.04 on both AP's. I know that this AP in earlier versions had problems with WPA and repeater mode, but it should be solved, but obviosly is not!

I haven't tried changing from WPA to WEP encryption, because WEP is no option for me.

"Resolves issues with WAP54G repeater mode"
Could some one please tell me how exactly is the repeater mode dealt with, since I have upgraded and still cannot find such a feature.
Please could you give me some more detailed "how to" set my linksys WRT54G v5 as a wifi repeater.
    Thanks in advance!

This does not make that WRT54G a repeater. The WRT54G cannot act as a repeater. You need to have a WAP54G to have some sort of repeater.

There were issues using a WAP54G (access point only) with a WRT54G (access point + router). With the new firmware that came out, it enables the use of the WAP as a repeater with the WRT.

The WRT54G cannot act as a repeater, but the upgrade for harware version 5 is required so a WAP54G will connect to it as a repeater.

The WAP54G access point is what is used for repeating and bridging. The WRT54G is a access point, router and DHCP server.

work for an ISP, and we are used to work with linksys routers and AP like repeaters. With the last version of AP (the one with the cisco logo in the front). The problem you describe happens ! If you do step by step as learn in Linksys webpage to setup WAP54G as repeater it will not work !!!! Ive discovered how to make it work, try this:
Conect your pc to the router, and the router to de AP , all wired !!!! Then enter to the AP and setup as client, put find networks and join the router network. After that leave a ping to the ap ip (ping -t ) , you are gonna see that the wlan light start blinking after some seconds. when that happens, just choose repeater mode and just copy the mac that appears in the client mode, after that wait until the wlan light start blinking again, when is done, just unplug the ap from the router, then change the ssid of the ap and its done ! its work like a repeater. The problem is that 2 or 3 days or a week later, from one moment to other, the ap "dont see" wrt anymore and the config is the same, you have to configure again !!!!. i talk to linksys support but they didnt know about this problem, i wish that i help with this
