WAP54G in Repeater mode using WPA-PSK problem

Almost 6 months I have been using my WAP54G (Sveasoft Freya) as repeater (in combination with a WRT54G (HyperWRT 2.0b3)) with a KISS DP-558 (HDD/DVD-player) connected to the WAP. The KISS DP-558 could connect to the internet without any problem. I had a WEP enabled on both devices.

I decided to upgrade the WAP firmware to the latest linksys because they now support WPA-PSK. After the firmware (I did a reset to default using the reset button on the back of the WAP) upgrade I configured the WAP and did a reboot (power cycle), reconnected it to the KISS DP-558. Normally the KISS DP-558 would get it's IP-address from the WRT54G but nothing is happening. Where did it go wrong? Anyone? Please?

Is it possible to use WDS with a WRT54G and a WAP54G? and if so; How do I need to configure this?

All help is welcome and thanks in advance for the effort.

I would suggest you upgrade the firmware on the WAP54G to stock firmware version 2.08. which supports WPA-PSK AEA or TKIP in repeater mode and bridge mode. You should always do a firmware update with a wired connection and reset to default factory setting.

Sorry that my description was not clear enough but what you describe is exactly what I have done. But it does not seem to work.

You should set the WAP54G with the same channel. SSID and encryption as your WRT54G and save the setting. You should set it as a DHCP client. You should enable SSID broadcast on both the router and WAP54G. You should go to the AP-Mode screen and set it repeater mode with the MAC address of your router and save the setting. There are three MAC addresses for the WRT54G use the wireless one. Power it down and connect the KISS DP-558 . If you have MAC filtering on your WRT54G, you should have the MAC addresses of the WAP54G in the list of PCs permitted to access the router. An alternative is to set the WAP54G as a bridge and connect the KISS DP-558 directly to it. The only difference is the setting and where yu enter the MAC address of the router.

Thanks for the info. I will try it when I get home.

    WPA Won't work for me

I have a similar combo, the WRT54Gv2 (3.03.8) and a WAP54G 92.08) in repeater mode. It works fine in open and WEP mode, but will not work with WPA. I reflashed the WAP54G a second time, and spent 2 hours on the phone with Linksys.

I have MAC filtering on, and have included the WAP's address on the WRT. When the WAP was wired into the WRT for flashing purposes, it worked fine. That tells me that the WAP is communicating w/ the laptop, and that the two wireless Linksys units are not talking properly.

I'd like the better security of WPA, and would prefer to have the Linksys firmware work as advertised instead of using third party (though I would try that). If you can lend a hand, that would be greatly appreciated. Again, the only change from it functioning w/o security or WEP to non-functioning is changing security methods. Your thoughts, please.

    I have the following setup:

WRT: DHCP enabled, MAC filtering enabled
    WRT firmware: HyperWRT 2.1b1

    WAP:static IP address=IPaddress WRT + 1, gateway = IP address of WRT
    WAP firmware: Linksys 2.08
    WAP as wireless bridge.

    SSID broadcast: on

SSID on WRT and WAP the same

Mixed Mode on WRT and WAP.

Try the following: power up both the WRT and WAP, then power cycle the WRT.

    Good luck,

Would WAP54G in repeater mode connect to any WLAN DSL router, or only to WRT54G (I use official 2.08 firmware) ? If not, would an alternative firmware help regarding this issue ?
To use the WAP54G in wireless client AP mode is not an option, because I cannot activate the encryption setting, not even WEP is possible (at least not with official 2.08 firmware).
    Thanks in advance,

It will connect to another WAP54G or a WRT54GS with the approprate firmware on those units in repeater mode. I never tried to connext to my WRT54GX, since theat unit has ehough range. Linksys only indicates it will connect to those units.
