I have 2 identical buffalo whr-hp-g54s routers running tomato 1.07 + WDS + AP (AES) in b+g mode, channel 11, samessid.

connection is fine but the link rate between the laptop and the router drops down quickly after connection from 54mbps to 2mbps. Full bars.

just wondering if this has to do with WDS - because in the single router config the rate was 54 always. Laptop is a Dell E1505 inspiron using the built in antenna.

I was curious if others had any issue like this or knew any solution? tweak the wireless settings somehow on the AP or client?

    thanks

    Aloah !

i am currently considering the witch to Tomato from DD-WRT with the same hardware (3x WHR-HP-G54)

So i am very interested in the WDS performace as that is my application of choice at this point in time.

To keep gettin compareable thoughput measurements i suggest you get the freeware Qcheck.

Couple of things first wich i have gathered so far regarding WDS.

The overhead is immense ! As a rule of thump you count your numbers of WDs hops and devide the maximum speed by that number. For example 54mbps with 2 hops would be 29mbps. With 3 hops you are down to 18 mpbs.
(Somone correct me please if that is wrong)

As i am unfamilar with the options tomato provides i might be off but here are some things you might give a try:

    - decide on a mode b or g. start with b and see how that goes. then try with g.
    - lock the speed at a set rate, start with 2 mpbs then slowly work yourself upwards.
    - look into the security settings. they take alot of overhead as well. i think WPA with PSK is about 50% of your bandwith.

LAst but not least for measuring the speed of your WDS connect your laptop per cable to the last WDS hop.

For comparison: With my 3 wds hops and my laptop cabled to the last buffalo in the row qcheck measures 10 to 11 mpbs. wireless the laptop on the last hop gets between 6 and 7 mbps.

I am really curious to see how tomato handels itself. please post your findings here.

    best regards

I had a WDS on DD-WRT and I switched it to Tomato,
much more stable and no reason to reboot every 24hrs and I love the realtime graphs.
WDS on DD-WRT is very similar to WDS on Tomato the same basic rules apply
and you can set all those options you mentioned.

I think you will be happy with the performance of Tomato... although I have not done any specific benchmarks, I can say for certain your results will be much better with Tomato.

Regarding encryption... WPA-PSK AES has hardware support in the Broadcomm chipset and therefore the the wireless overhead is greatly reduced... resulting in a faster connection.
