why is it that i only get around 1.2 mb/s whgen i connect my routers in WDS? When not in wds i can reach 2.7 mb/s?

WDS is repeater mode. everytime a repeater is added to a Wireless network the bandwidth is halved and is normal.

are there other modes that don't do that?

Depends on what you wanna do. If you can wire both routers to a back-bone, and you want wireless clients to roam, you can do that by having the same SSID and the routers on different channels - no WDS, just AP. Different SSIDs also works, but the client's flip from one AP to the other is a little slower.
