I have been a DD-WRT guy for a long time. I have had a WDS up with 3 WRT54G's for years with no problems, now the issue:
Main router is RT-N66U, two slaves in daisy chain, RT-N16's. I had DD-WRT on the them, the WDS was up, VERY SLOW, but unstable. I would have to reboot etc all the time. After reading a ton of forums, looked like everyone liked Tomato for the RT-16 and RT-n66u, so, off I go for hours of upgrading and reprogramming. Had them all together, flashed in the firmware, wiped the NVRAM, redid all configurations from scratch, I got the WDS up once. Then put the routers where they need to go and now they wont come up. They were working in the same spots as DD-WRT. I can get the middle router to connect to one or the other some times, and in the overview page I see a -/54 in the TX/RX area on the one side and 54/- on the other router. So, what are the builds that are going to give me the most stable WDS across these 3 routers? I even had the WDS up with WDS only on N only and it was screaming, but I need wireless connections on the ends....
    Oh I'm on Shibby's on the RT-N66U:
    Tomato Firmware 1.28.0000 MIPSR2-101 K26 USB BT-VPN-64K
    On the RT-N16 Shibby's
Any ideas, is a VPN issue?

    I haven't used Shibby's builds, nor do I have a RT-N66u, but
on my RT-N16's has been extremely reliable in a WDS environment.

Are you using WPA2 security? I could never get more than 1 slave to connect. However WPA works perfectly.
I didn't observe any difference in reliability or performance when switching between WDS only and WDS+AP.

Sorry, can't comment on the effect of adding VPN to the mix.

Will that firmware work on both? Does it have the N for the RT-N66U? I think the N16's will work with it or without, but the 66U needs it.
I had to flash back to the original Asus firmware because the 66U wouldn't flash in, the only thing i could do was revert to the default Asus. So....I went back to the Asus firmware on all routers, and the WDS come right up, I have no idea what speeds as the software is a little lacking on stats, but it's up. My speed test.net testes are going much faster than they were with DD-WRT or Tomato. The only drawback is it's on WEP, not WPA2, but I live in a town of 300 people, yes 300, in the middle of the woods. So right now I am going to try it with stock firmware and see what kind of stability I get.
