Web browsers curdle for chillispot clients

I've finally managed to get chillispot working on Dd-WRTv23Sp2 after a long, hard battle. The client gets an address and I see the accounting on the radius server. DNS lookups from the client work in a DOS window. But my problem is that IE and Firefox browsers start out OK, but soon curdle. I mean, I can do a Google search and it works, but I can't follow any citations. Meanwhile, I can go to a DOS window and type "telnet www.mygooglecitation.com 80" and finish the very same web hit that is still stammering and dying in the browser.

The browser's connection settings are set to "direct to Internet",

This has been repeated on two different DD-WRT on separate networks with the same symptom.

Can anybody help me? This thing with the browsers going sour is the only problem I need to solve still. Thanks for anything you can offer.
